The data clearly supports lexical decomposition (padres from madre y padre), and clearly suggests that the gender-agreement transformation is conditioned semantically (since the adjectives do not agree with padres, which is masculine, but with its implied constituents)—seeming to offer solid evidence for generative semantics. Chomsky is reputed to have declared gender agreement to be a wholly semantic phenomenon, something handled by semantic interpretation rules, rather than transformational rules, a position which implies that 16 is perfectly grammatical, but semantically anomalous:
